THIS USAGE IS NO LONGER CURRENT BECAUSE THE LARGEST NUMBERS USUALLY EXPRESSED IN THE ROMAN SYSTEM ARE DATES...SO, BOYS AND GIRLS, THE NEXT TIME YOU'RE WATCHING THE BEGINNING OF ONE OF THOSE FABULOUS WARNER BROS. CARTOONS WHEREIN MEL BLANC IS DOING ALL THOSE "IMPOSSIBLE TO BELIEVE" VOICES, AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN, BELOW THE W/B LOGO IT WILL SAY THE FOLLOWING...

.........and then there's the metric system, but that's another story for another day. Oh well, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Play the fiddle while your city burns! Or was that a keyboard? Or was that Chicago? Or was that a cow? Now you got me all messed up!
...no kidding...boggles the brain, don't it?
Ok...you made me laugh with this one...that's a good start :p
Interesting hypothesis about the fall of the Roman Empire. hehe
The Roman numerals at the bottom of the Warner Bros. cartoon screen were the only thing I never understood when I watched them.
Yeah, and no wonder Nero played while Rome burned.
Do you think he was playing in lV/lV or V/Vlll?
I would like to thank Mr. Day, my high school Latin teacher, I actually get this!
It seems we have the Arabs to thank for modern mathematics, they seem to be the translator and accumulator of mathematics from the greeks and others.
Isn't it funny how we use Roman numerals to put greater weight or importance on something, such as Super Bowl XXIV?
"Every culture on earth has developed some mathematics. In some cases, this mathematics has spread from one culture to another. Now there is one predominant international mathematics, and this mathematics has quite a history. It has roots in ancient Egypt and Babylonia, then grew rapidly in ancient Greece. Mathematics written in ancient Greek was translated into Arabic. About the same time some mathematics of India was translated into Arabic. Later some of this mathematics was translated into Latin and became the mathematics of Western Europe. Over a period of several hundred years, it became the mathematics of the world.
There are other places in the world that developed significant mathematics, such as China, southern India, and Japan, and they are interesting to study, but the mathematics of the other regions have not had much influence on current international mathematics. There is, of course, much mathematics being done these and other regions, but it is not the traditional math of the regions, but international mathematics.
By far, the most significant development in mathematics was giving it firm logical foundations. This took place in ancient Greece in the centuries preceding Euclid. See Euclid's Elements. Logical foundations give mathematics more than just certainty-they are a tool to investigate the unknown.
By the 20th century the edge of that unknown had receded to where only a few could see. One was David Hilbert, a leading mathematician of the turn of the century. In 1900 he addressed the International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris, and described 23 important mathematical problems.
Mathematics continues to grow at a phenomenal rate. There is no end in sight, and the application of mathematics to science becomes greater all the time"
Thanks for the refresher course...
Professor Cummings!
I forgot I used to know my Roman numerals.
You sure mix it up so as not to bore anyone.
BTW...I got my copies of ATG. So much for giving them as Christmas gifts. I couldn't wait!
The DVD is GREAT! It was fun and exciting to watch everyone working together and having fun at the same time. I still can't figure out how Lil keeps from laughing while filming. She is a real professional.
Thank You for all of the wonderful songs on this CD!! I'm going to order a few more for some of my friends.
You're the best Burton...

I could never catch all the letters to know what the year is. I remember seeing C's and M's and X's. What's the big secret!

...and I always have a helluva time with those Roman numerals whenever they come up in crossword puzzles. You wrote this note once before - over in the other Clubhouse - and I actually printed it out, so it would be close at hand for just such opportunities!
Thanks for the reminder.
Suzanne
Sorry Burton, but you lost me at-The CD means 100 away from 500. I vaguely remember having to learn roman numerals in school. I wouldn't be able to explain it like you just did. I prefer the good old English numerals myself.
Wow, not only a gentleman but a scholar too!
I only vaguely remember my roman numeral lessons, your knowledge and memory astound me....thanks for the recall !!
Ms Harley
Thank God for cartoons, movies and Super Bowl, that's how I learned my Roman Numerals......sorta.
And the reason for this reminder is?
lol. This brings me back to high school studies..OMG, I hated Roman numerals. Thanks for the memories!
ps hope you'll see huge roman numerals tabulating sales of ATG!
Cheers,

Burton, how DO you come up with this stuff? LOL I vaguely remember roman numerals from my days in school....they were scrawled all over the cave walls. LMAO
Hey Burt,
Since I was born in 1951 let me say thanks for the info (I think).....lol.....Now try adding and subtracting, not to mention multiplying or dividing in Roman Numerals....now try writing out the number 1,234,567,890 in BASE 2 which is used in computers where you have a choice of 0 or 1. (on or off)....

COPYRIGHT MCMLI BY THE VITAPHONE CORP?
I THOUGHT MCMLI WAS THE LATEST RELEASE BY CHICAGO. HEY, THEY'VE BEEN AROUND AWHILE!
Super Bowl XLIII is coming up.
A champion of free speech and great Cape Bretoner has left us. Blair MacLean passed away Oct. 29.
I saw Blair and Gary MacLean opening for Burton at the Nags Head North, just north of Toronto, many years ago. What a show, what incredible talent. I can still hear Burton's version of Runaround Sue.
Usually you knew the century and probably the decade a movie was made and we all had to learn at least the I, V and X's. Well guess no more. Why do they use that system in Hollywood anyway? Hmmmm Hollywood... Rome... does anyone see a connection? Mike Mullen
Sorry Mr. C, too much thinking after a long day at work. Just feel like picking up whatever you spill today.
Okay Burton, you mentioned Mel Blanc. Here is some trivia that I am sure you know the answer. Mel performed one of his famous characters on a song that was recorded by a famous crooner. If I can recall, it was the crooner's last hit on the pop charts. Good luck
This numerical note was approved by Bozo!!
how many people remember this way of counting????
Richardism....
What a thought provoking concept. I watched the DVD that came with Above The Ground. Your explanation of Richard saved me from a mind blasting as I was trying to figure out who Richard was!
Thought provoking? Yup. Today I was wondering if I had any Richards in the making. Who is at cause for Richardism? Was I at cause for not "granting enough greatness" or was it that he did not grant me enough greatness and thus I refused to make him real. This is a bit like the chicken and the egg. All I can be sure of is with Richardism you are at least one up on both Kant and Jung.
I am absolutely sure Burton will never be a Richard for me!
