OBAMA ELECTED

SOMEONE JUST SAID THIS ON CNN...

"ONLY THE MOST UNGRACIOUS OF INDIVIDUALS COULD SAY OR THINK THAT THIS IS NOT A WATERSHED NIGHT FOR THE UNITED STATES..."
WELL SAID...FOR MILLIONS, TONIGHT'S EVENTS SEEMED JUST IMPOSSIBLE, ALMOST UNTHINKABLE, FOR FAR TOO LONG...
YES, THE COUNTRY STILL HAS A LONG, LONG WAY TO GO IN MANY AREAS, BUT FOR TONIGHT, PERSONALLY, I WANT TO FOCUS ON THE GOOD THAT IS OCCURRING AND TRY TO PUSH THE BAD INTO THE BACKGROUND...NOT PERMANENTLY, BUT INDEED FOR TONIGHT.
THE REST OF THE WORLD WILL FROM THIS NIGHT ON VIEW THE U.S.A. WITH A DIFFERENT EYE.
I WATCHED THE TEARS RUN DOWN THE FACES OF SOME OF THE OLDER BLACK FOLKS WHEN THE NEWS WAS ANNOUNCED...PEOPLE WHO HAD LIVED THROUGH LYNCHINGS...PEOPLE WHO USED TO HAVE TO USE DIFFERENT DRINKING FOUNTAINS...THOSE TEARS AND EXPRESSIONS SPOKE VOLUMES...
A HUGE, HUGE STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION...TONIGHT IS HISTORY...GOOD HISTORY...
GOD SPEED PRESIDENT OBAMA...

Congratulations to Obama! He has lots on his shoulders but his energy will serve him well. I think it will serve the country well, too. I hope that the people there will show patience and trust in him - to help get policies and plans happening - its going to take awhile but with support and a willingness by the people, change can happen.

Well said, Burton! What a moment for America. Finally! If he achives half of what he wants to, this country will be on it's way to greatness again. The past eight years have been a nightmare for so many people in this country.

Now, if we could get YOU to tour, and promote your new CD in the U.S...life would be perfect in my opinion.

Much Luck and Happiness...

Indeed a historic night for America and a message that will span the globe. It appears that the American electorate has passed a milestone by embracing the importance of tolerance and change regionally, nationally and internationally.

I applaud those who sought change on this eve. As the President-elect eluded to in his address in Chicago tonight there remains monumental challenges ahead...perhaps this is indeed a point of new beginnings where change will be embraced by those who for so long have resisted peaceful co-existence.

Thank you Burton for taking this moment to reflect on the day's events.

I can understand those tears, I think we all can. I'm sure it is a dream those old folks had almost given up on, at least for their generation. Their hearts are now full again. It's all good! Congratulations U.S.A.

The best man won last night. I do not see a person of colour when I look at him. I see a personality.

Pray for things to come...America will be tested and tested again, more than just by terrorists and anti-American entities.
I heard someone say once "I'd rather live as if there is a God, and die to find out there isn't, than to live as if there isn't a God and die to find out there is".
There are higher powers than our government with whom we need to check ourselves and what we stand for.

I am so proud of the American people at this moment!! With this GIANT step forward we show people of all race, creed and color that there is hope in a democratic society. If this Nation can come together as one, perhaps this will pave the way to peace in Gaza and others regions of the world. What a way to show the World that we have our act together!!

Now let's move forward and make some real changes!!

Obama was not my choice in the election, as I am philosophically opposed to his views and am concerned about his lack of experience.

Having said that I do take pride that our nation has elected a black person as President. The US has taken too many hits from outside saying we are bigoted and intolerant. In the US you can achieve anything and this is further proof.

Congratulations to Obama for his victory.

Amazing to think that 140 years ago President Elect Obama would have been a slave...
Now.....YES. WE. CAN!!!! I am happy for my American friends and my family in the USA!!!

I am also very happy for Obama and his family. He is not only the better man for the job, he has many ideas and plans to undertake to get the country back on track. He has a lot on his plate and I hope that the American people will continue to support him.

Had tears rolling down my face too. I experienced racism first hand and it's not nice. Was escorted out of a hair salon with my friend's daughter. It really was disgusting. Also been followed around a "nice" part of town that we shouldn't have had the right to be in.
Congratulations president Obama.

Well said Burton. As a 52 year old American, I have seen many things in my lifetime. The assasination of JFK, I lived through the Detroit riots of 1967, the rise and assasination of Martin Luther King, Vietnam, Nixon, the incredible growth of wealth in the 1990's, 911 and the current financial crisis. Obama's election is another defining moment in our country. As you so aptly pointed out, our country has had a dismal and embarrassing history of race relations (it even resulted in a popular musical group singing the lyrics "I don't need your ghetto scenes"). To see a black man elected as President was amazing and gives me hope that our country and our world can move beyond our differences and work together for the things we all value - peace, love, security and prosperity.

As you said, "God Speed President Obama."

Cincy Mike

PS: I'm proud to be an Ohioan who voted for Obama and swung this important state for an Obama win. (Do you think Obama will invite me to the inagural for my important vote? lol)

Although having come from a long line of Republicans, seeing all the blacks AND young people so engaged with what had taken place, the excitement in places like Times Square & in Chicago really gave me a feeling of hope. If these people who'd previously felt disenfranchised or otherwise detached now feel a part of the process, this country can accomplish great things...even if the approach does not exactly jive with my dogmatics, anyone's "correct" politics are useless if a large segment of the people don't give a rip.
Perception IS important, and I think we gained respect internationally with this outcome, to start afresh.
McCain kinda blew it for me by selecting the expedient candidate as running mate...like a tv show in its death throes doing something startling to boast the ratings.
(Okay, Sarah Palin is kind of hot, but she could use some "My Fair Lady" lessons)

Burton, well said my friend. I wish President Elect Obama all of the blessings in the world. I think it is important that everyone work together especially in these trying times and empower him. I think of Sam Cooke's song "A Change is Gonna Come" and the path walked by Dr. King and so many who have come before. Prejudice has been so prevalent in our society as you shared. I can remember as a kid in a respected Catholic school how one of the nuns came under fire for trying to start a pen pal program with a black church. This stuck with me for a long time (even in a so called Christian setting) how prevalent and hurtful prejudice is. All I can say is "onward and upward" and never give up. Love, Joyce

I was weeping myself! It's a moment that holds so much promise, and I'm holding onto that thought for the moment because, as we know, this momentous decision that our American neighbours have taken will surely have impact upon the ENTIRE world.
Speaking of our American neighbours, I recently heard that you have become an American citizen...although I believe you've also held onto your Canadian citizenship?? Did Obama's candidacy have any bearing on your decision?
Best regards,
